The most damaging SEO problems on most WordPress sites are completely invisible — to you, your visitors, and even most developers. Google, however, sees every one of them. And when it does, it quietly stops sending you traffic. No error message. Just silence.
WordPress is an incredibly capable platform for SEO — but it’s also a system where well-intentioned plugins, themes, and configurations quietly conflict with each other in ways that produce serious SEO consequences. After auditing hundreds of WordPress sites through our SEO audit and remediation service, the same categories of problems appear again and again. Here’s what we look for, why these issues matter, and what the fix looks like.
This is the single most common technical SEO problem we find on WordPress sites — and the most misunderstood. When you install Yoast SEO (or Rank Math, or All in One SEO), you get an SEO plugin that manages your meta tags. But your WordPress theme may also output its own title tags. Your page builder might add another layer. Your hosting company’s “SEO booster” plugin might contribute yet another.
The result: Google receives multiple conflicting title tags and meta descriptions for the same page. Rather than trying to determine which one is “correct,” Google often ignores all of them and generates its own — which is almost certainly worse than the optimized version you wrote in Yoast.
Use your browser’s View Source function on any page and search for “og:title” or “<title>”. If you see more than one instance with different content, you have duplicate meta output — and Google is seeing the same confusion.
Schema markup — the structured data that helps Google understand your business, services, and credibility — is powerful when implemented correctly and actively harmful when implemented incorrectly. As we covered in our guide on what schema markup is and why it matters, the most common schema errors on WordPress sites include:
These conflicts don’t just prevent rich results — they can trigger manual quality actions from Google’s review team if the schema is significantly misleading.
Yoast SEO is installed on tens of millions of WordPress sites. Most of those installs have at least one significant misconfiguration. Common issues we find during audits include:
WordPress plugins interact with each other in ways that are impossible to predict from reading their documentation. A caching plugin might serve a cached version of a page that includes old meta tags, even after you’ve updated them. A performance plugin might strip what it considers “redundant” code — which includes your carefully structured schema markup. A deactivated plugin might leave orphaned hooks behind that continue to fire and interfere with active plugins. These interactions are exactly what our WordPress SEO audit is designed to surface — because they’re invisible in normal website use.
Canonical tags tell Google which version of a page is the “official” one for indexing purposes. When these are wrong — pointing to a different URL than the one you want indexed, missing entirely, or conflicting with other canonical signals — Google may index the wrong version of your pages, diluting your search authority across multiple URLs instead of concentrating it where it belongs.
Google evaluates your site’s navigation as a signal of site quality. Broken dropdown links, pages that exist but aren’t linked from navigation, or navigation structures that differ between page templates are all signals Google uses to assess how well-maintained and organized your site is. We’ve seen sites where the desktop navigation and mobile navigation point to entirely different URLs — and neither the site owner nor their developer had noticed.
⚡ Pro Tip: The fastest way to check if your site has any of these issues is to run it through Google Search Console’s URL Inspection tool on several key pages. Look for warnings under “Page indexing,” “Enhancements,” and “Rich results.” These are the signals Google is already using to evaluate your site — and seeing them before Google’s ranking algorithm penalizes you is the entire point of an audit. Understanding how AI is changing SEO also matters here — these technical foundations are what AI-era search evaluates first.
Our WordPress SEO Audit & Remediation service goes through every one of these areas — and more — systematically. We don’t just identify the problems. We fix them, document what we changed and why, and verify the fix with Google’s own tools before closing out the engagement. The result is a site that Google can clearly read, correctly index, and confidently rank — without silent conflicts undermining everything else you’re doing to grow your business online.
